Everything traces to one stray. In June 1981, in Lakewood, California, Joe and Grace Ruga took in a longhaired black female with oddly backward-curling ears and named her Shulamith. Her kittens inherited the curl, and test matings confirmed a single dominant gene. Because the breed was built from an ordinary stray and stayed open to domestic outcrosses, its gene pool remained broad. Both longhaired and shorthaired varieties were developed, with championship recognition following within a decade. Kittens are born with straight ears that begin curling within days and set permanently by about four months.
