Temperament

The American Shorthair is best summed up as even-keeled, patient, family-proof. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 2/5 means the zoomies visit politely and leave.

Where the American Shorthair Comes From

These descend from the working cats carried aboard European ships to protect grain and rope from rodents, which then spread across North America as ordinary farm and town cats. In the early 1900s breeders began registering the soundest examples rather than importing anything exotic. The Cat Fanciers Association included the type among its earliest recognised breeds in 1906, under the plainer name Domestic Shorthair; the name changed in 1966 to separate pedigreed stock from the general moggy population. The silver classic tabby is the pattern most people picture, though dozens of colours exist.

Living With a American Shorthair

Undemanding is the fair word. This cat will sit in the same room rather than on you, tolerate a toddler pulling a tail, ignore a new dog after a fortnight, and complain almost never; the voice rates near the bottom of the scale. It handles a full working day alone better than most pedigree breeds. The short dense coat sheds steadily year round, heavier in spring, so keep a rubber brush and expect fur on dark clothes. A flat suits it if you provide a window perch and two short hunting games daily to hold the weight down.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with moderate energy, plan daily play sessions and a climbing spot. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

This is one of the genuinely robust pedigree breeds, with a long typical lifespan and no heavy inherited burden. The exception worth naming is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which has been documented in the breed; breeding cats should have annual echocardiograms by a cardiologist, and any murmur in a pet deserves investigation. Hip dysplasia is reported occasionally. In practice the biggest threat is obesity, because a hearty appetite meets only moderate energy, and excess weight brings diabetes and arthritis. Weigh food rather than free-feeding, and keep up dental care, since tartar and gingivitis shorten quality of life. Annual vet checks apply.
