Where the Balinese Comes From

Not Indonesian at all. Longhaired kittens turned up periodically in Siamese litters, carried by a recessive gene, and American breeders chose to develop rather than discard them from the 1940s onward. Marion Dorsey in California and Helen Smith in New York did the foundational work, and Smith supplied the name, borrowed from the dancers of Bali because the cats moved with the same fluidity. Siamese breeders initially objected to the association. The result is a Siamese in every respect but coat length: same wedge head, same colourpoints, same blue eyes, same opinions.

Living With a Balinese

Volume is the thing to decide about before buying. A Balinese talks, answers back, and escalates when ignored, and the voice carries through walls, which makes shared-wall flats a real consideration. Physically it is undemanding: a single silky coat with no woolly undercoat, so it almost never mats, sheds lightly and needs only a weekly comb, with a plumed tail as the main feature. Mentally it is demanding. These cats bond intensely, learn to open doors and drawers, fetch, and deteriorate into destructive misery when left alone all day. A second cat is close to essential.

Care Notes

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

Screening follows the Siamese lines behind it. Progressive retinal atrophy of the rdAc type has a DNA test and should be cleared in both parents. Amyloidosis affecting the liver is documented in Siamese-derived cats and has no test, so ask about any family history of unexplained illness in young adults. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy warrants annual echocardiography in breeding stock. Oriental-type cats are also prone to gingivitis and periodontal disease, making dental care unusually important, and asthma-type airway disease is reported in this group. Crossed eyes and kinked tails are cosmetic. Raise all of this with your vet at annual checks.
