Temperament

The Exotic Shorthair is best summed up as sweet, quiet, cuddly. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 1/5 means the zoomies visit politely and leave.

Where the Exotic Shorthair Comes From

An accident of the American show bench. During the 1950s some American Shorthair breeders crossed to Persians for a rounder head and denser coat; purists objected to the results, and in 1966 the CFA judge Jane Martinke proposed housing them in a new breed instead. Russian Blue and Burmese were used in a few early lines before the standard tightened to Persian type on a short coat. Persian outcrossing is still permitted, which is why two short-coated Exotics can produce long-haired kittens that carry the same recessive.

Living With a Exotic Shorthair

Quiet is the headline. Exotics rarely announce themselves, rarely climb to the top of anything, and spend most of the day on furniture at human level, which makes them unusually well suited to flats and to people who dislike noise. The plush coat is short but very dense and still sheds, so a weekly comb through the undercoat prevents the tufts that otherwise appear on clothing. Tear staining needs wiping most days. Hot weather is genuinely harder for them than for other cats, so keep rooms cool.

Care Notes

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with low energy, plan a couple of short play sessions and a sunny perch. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

Everything inherited from the Persian comes with the face. Flattened skulls bring narrowed nostrils, noisy breathing, heat intolerance and tear ducts that overflow onto the muzzle. Polycystic kidney disease has a reliable PKD1 DNA test and responsible catteries have largely cleared it, so ask for results. Progressive retinal atrophy in this line is also DNA testable, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is screened by echocardiogram. Crowded jaws mean early dental disease. Queens with very flat faces have a higher rate of difficult births. Your veterinarian should assess airway and eyes at every visit.
