Temperament

The Khao Manee is best summed up as social, confident, bright. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, with the occasional opinion delivered out loud. Chaos rating 3/5 means a daily zoomies window is part of the deal.

Where the Khao Manee Comes From

A Thai landrace, its name meaning white gem, described in the old Thai cat treatises alongside the Korat and the Siamese and kept in royal households in Bangkok. For most of its history it was simply the white cat of Thailand rather than a registered breed. Western breeding began after imports to the United States around 1999, with TICA taking the breed on for registration in 2009 and championship status arriving later. Thai breeders still maintain their own lines independently of Western registries.

Living With a Khao Manee

If your cat is deaf, the practical adjustments are permanent: no unsupervised outdoor access, approach within sight rather than from behind, and use floor vibration or a light flick to call. Deaf cats also tend to be loud, since they cannot modulate their own volume. Beyond that, this is a busy, forward, people-following cat that plays fetch and greets strangers rather than hiding. The short white coat sheds visibly onto dark clothing and furniture, and a weekly brush keeps that manageable.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The dominant white gene responsible for the coat is also associated with congenital deafness, especially in blue-eyed cats; an odd-eyed Khao Manee may be deaf on the blue side only. BAER testing is the definitive check and reputable breeders perform it on kittens. White ears and noses burn in strong sun, so sunlit windows and outdoor access carry a skin cancer risk over years. The registered population is small, making diversity a live concern. Have hearing assessed and discuss sun exposure and skin checks with your veterinarian.
