Temperament

The Maine Coon is best summed up as gentle-giant, chirpy, doggish. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 2/5 means the zoomies visit politely and leave.

Where the Maine Coon Comes From

New England farms and ports, where long-coated ship cats almost certainly bred with local shorthairs; the raccoon-cross story is biologically impossible and the Marie Antoinette legend is unevidenced folklore. What is documented is the show record: Maine Coons competed in nineteenth-century North American cat shows, and a brown tabby named Cosey won at Madison Square Garden in 1895. The breed then nearly disappeared as imported Persians took the prizes, was revived by dedicated breeders from the 1950s, and became the state cat of Maine in 1985.

Living With a Maine Coon

Size dictates the logistics. You need an oversized litter tray, a scratching post taller than the cat standing up, and sturdy furniture, and many will paw water out of a bowl onto the floor. Instead of meowing they chirp and trill, a genuinely quiet sound for such a large animal. The shaggy coat mats in the ruff and trousers and needs combing two or three times a week, with heavy seasonal shedding. They mature slowly, over three or four years, and follow their people around constantly.

Care Notes

Grooming: Moderate effort. Brush a few times weekly; more during seasonal shedding. Exercise: with moderate energy, plan daily play sessions and a climbing spot. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

This breed has the most developed screening programme in the cat world, so expect paperwork. The MyBPC3 A31P mutation linked to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has a DNA test, but it does not catch every case, so annual echocardiography remains necessary alongside it. Spinal muscular atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency both have DNA tests. Hip dysplasia is real in a cat this size and is assessed radiographically. Ask for cardiologist reports rather than a breeder's assurance. Given the adult weight, your veterinarian should also monitor joints and body condition throughout life.
