Temperament

The Oriental Shorthair is best summed up as opinionated, bonded, dramatic. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, with plenty to say about it. Chaos rating 5/5 means secure your shelves — this one treats your home as a platformer level.

Where the Oriental Shorthair Comes From

British breeders in the 1950s and 60s set out to put Siamese structure into solid colours, crossing Siamese descended from Thai stock with British domestic shorthairs, Russian Blues and Abyssinians, then breeding back toward the Siamese wedge. Early solid chocolate results were registered separately as the Havana. CFA accepted the Oriental Shorthair for championship in 1977. The standard now covers well over three hundred colour and pattern combinations, which is why two Orientals can look nothing alike while sharing an identical skeleton and head shape.

Living With a Oriental Shorthair

Volume is the thing nobody warns you about properly. An Oriental comments on the shower running, the fridge opening and a closed door, and the voice is flat, loud and carrying rather than a soft trill. They follow one person from room to room and sulk visibly when shut out. Left alone all day with no company they will unpick a houseplant or a roll of toilet paper out of boredom, so a second cat is a genuine kindness. The sleek coat sheds very little. Thin-coated, they colonise radiators, laptops and laps.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with sky-high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The Oriental inherits the Siamese health list more or less intact. DNA tests exist for the rdAc form of progressive retinal atrophy and for mucopolysaccharidosis VI, and both should appear on a breeder's paperwork. Systemic amyloidosis, which deposits protein in the liver and kidneys, runs in some Siamese-derived lines and surfaces as vague weight loss or sudden liver failure in middle age. Gingivitis and early dental disease are common enough to justify yearly oral assessment. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is checked by echocardiogram. Discuss a screening schedule with your own vet rather than relying on pedigree paperwork alone.
