Where the Tonkinese Comes From

Tonkinese cats are the deliberate middle ground between two Asian imports. Wong Mau, the founding cat of the Burmese breed in 1930s America, was herself almost certainly a Siamese and Burmese blend, so the combination predates the name by decades. Breeders in Canada and the United States formalised it during the 1960s, pairing the two parent breeds to fix the mink coat and aqua eyes that neither shows on its own. Because mink is the heterozygous result of two different colour alleles, mink-to-mink litters still throw pointed and solid kittens alongside it.
