Temperament

The White Cat is best summed up as striking, gentle, pristine. Expect a cat that's right in the middle of everything you do, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 3/5 means a daily zoomies window is part of the deal.

Where the White Cat Comes From

A white cat is usually showing a mask rather than a colour. The dominant white gene switches off pigment production across the whole coat, hiding whatever pattern the cat genetically carries, which is why two white parents can produce a tabby kitten. It differs from extensive white spotting, and from true albinism, which is rare in cats; the Siamese point pattern is a temperature-sensitive member of that same albino series. White cats occur across many breeds, including the Khao Manee and the Turkish Angora, and throughout the random-bred population.

Living With a White Cat

A deaf white cat is not a difficult cat, but it needs adjustments: keep it indoors or in a secure garden, approach within its line of sight, and use floor vibration or a light switch instead of calling its name. Many sleep unusually deeply and startle when touched, so wake them gently. Colour predicts nothing about personality, and a Khao Manee and a white farm cat share only a phenotype. White fur shows dirt and tear staining, so faces benefit from a regular wipe with a damp cloth.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with moderate energy, plan daily play sessions and a climbing spot. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

Two genuine concerns attach to a white coat. The dominant white gene is linked to congenital deafness, because the cells that make pigment are also required in the inner ear; risk is substantially higher in blue-eyed white cats, and an odd-eyed cat is frequently deaf only on the blue-eyed side. A BAER test gives a definite answer. Second, unpigmented skin on ear tips and nose burns readily, and repeated sun damage in white cats is a recognised route to squamous cell carcinoma. Discuss sun exposure and hearing testing with your vet.
