Where the American Bobtail Comes From

This one starts in the 1960s with a short-tailed brown tabby male found near an Arizona reservation, taken home by John and Brenda Sanders and bred to their seal-point Siamese. The kittens kept the short tail, showing the mutation was dominant. Later breeders widened the gene pool with domestic cats and moved away from the pointed look, aiming for a rugged, wild appearance without any wild ancestry. The bobtail gene here is separate from the Manx gene and from the Japanese Bobtail gene. Championship recognition came only in the early 2000s.

Living With a American Bobtail

Dog comparisons get overused, but they fit here: many learn to fetch, walk on a harness, meet visitors at the door and cope with car travel better than most cats. The voice is low and used sparingly, mostly chirps and trills. This is a large, slow-maturing cat that takes three years to fill out, and it handles children, dogs and household upheaval with unusual patience. Coat length varies from short to shaggy; either way plan a thorough comb once or twice weekly and expect visible seasonal shedding. Tolerates a working day alone, provided there is something to climb and a window.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in most pedigree populations; ask whether breeding cats have annual echocardiograms. Hip dysplasia turns up occasionally in the heavier lines.
