Temperament

The British Longhair is best summed up as mellow, dignified, independent. Expect a cat that's affectionate on its own schedule, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 1/5 means the zoomies visit politely and leave.

Where the British Longhair Comes From

This breed exists because of wartime rebuilding. British Shorthair numbers collapsed during both world wars, and Persians were used heavily to restore them and to add colours, leaving the recessive longhair gene circulating in the population. For decades the long-coated kittens born in British Shorthair litters were simply variants and could not be shown. Registries came round at different times, several only within the past twenty years, and some still class the cat as a British Shorthair variant rather than a breed of its own. Apart from coat length, the standard is the same cat.

Living With a British Longhair

Undramatic and self-possessed. Most British Longhairs dislike being picked up, preferring to sit beside you or in the same room, and the voice is close to silent, which makes them excellent flat cats and easy with a regular working day alone. The catch is coat and waistline. A dense long coat with heavy undercoat needs combing three or four times a week, daily during the spring moult, with the armpits and trousers checked for knots. Appetite outruns activity, so weigh meals. Maturity is slow, with full size and adult coat around three years.

Care Notes

Grooming: Moderate effort. Brush a few times weekly; more during seasonal shedding. Exercise: with low energy, plan a couple of short play sessions and a sunny perch. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

Screening mirrors the British Shorthair. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the significant heart concern, with no validated breed-specific DNA test, so annual echocardiography of breeding cats is the meaningful check. Polycystic kidney disease entered through the Persian outcrosses and is detected cheaply by a PKD1 DNA test; insist on seeing results or testing a kitten. Haemophilia B, a factor IX clotting deficiency, has been documented in British lines and also has a test. Blood type B is common, which matters for breeders and for transfusions. This build gains weight easily, so monitor body condition with your vet.
