Where the Siberian Comes From

Forest cats of this type have been recorded in Russia for centuries, but the Siberian only became a formal breed in the late 1980s, when Soviet cat clubs in Leningrad and Moscow wrote a standard around 1987. The first cats reached the United States in 1990 through an exchange arranged by Elizabeth Terrell with the Russian breeder Nelly Sachuk. The colourpoint variety, the Neva Masquerade, is named after the river Neva and is accepted as a Siberian by some registries and treated separately by others.

Living With a Siberian

The triple coat is the practical reality. It is water-resistant, dense at the neck and trousers, and twice a year it comes out in handfuls for several weeks, at which point daily combing is the difference between a tidy home and drifts of undercoat. The rest of the year twice weekly is enough. Siberians climb genuinely well, land heavily, and like water enough to interfere with a running tap. They are sociable without the constant commentary of the Oriental breeds, tolerate dogs and children, and need real vertical space rather than a bare flat.

Care Notes

Grooming: Moderate effort. Brush a few times weekly; more during seasonal shedding. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is documented in Siberian lines and is screened by echocardiogram; there is no reliable breed-specific gene test for it, so scanning matters more than paperwork. Pyruvate kinase deficiency, an inherited anaemia, does occur in the breed and does have a DNA test worth asking about. The widely repeated idea that Siberians are hypoallergenic is overstated: some individuals produce less Fel d 1 than average, but this varies cat by cat and cannot be guaranteed by breed. Spend time with the actual cat first, and confirm any allergy plan with your own doctor and vet.
