Temperament

The Chausie is best summed up as athletic, adventurous, demanding. Expect a cat that's affectionate on its own schedule, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 5/5 means secure your shelves — this one treats your home as a platformer level.

Where the Chausie Comes From

The foundation is the jungle cat, Felis chaus, a medium-sized wild species of the Middle East and South Asia, crossed with domestic cats. Ancient Egyptians clearly kept and mummified F. chaus, and matings with house cats may have happened there, but that is background rather than lineage. The breed proper is an American programme begun in the 1990s, aiming to keep the long-legged, tall-eared look in a cat of reliable temperament. TICA registered it in the 1990s and advanced it to championship status the following decade. Early-generation cats remain legally restricted in some jurisdictions.

Living With a Chausie

This is the most demanding cat on most lists for good reason. Chausies jump to the tops of doors, need daily hard exercise, and will dismantle a room that offers nothing to do; a tall climbing structure and a securely enclosed outdoor run are close to necessities. They are loyal and often leash-trainable but rarely lap cats. The voice is quiet; the physical footprint is not. The short coat needs almost nothing. Unsuitable for a small flat, for a first cat, or for a household where nobody is home, and unsuitable for fragile ornaments anywhere.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with sky-high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The important breed-specific point is digestive. Jungle cat ancestry is associated with a shorter intestinal tract, and chronic intestinal inflammation with poor tolerance of plant-heavy foods is a recognised problem, so most breeders advise a high-meat, low-grain diet and persistent diarrhoea should be investigated rather than tolerated. Early-generation males are usually sterile, which is normal for hybrids. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is screened by echocardiogram as in other breeds. Anaesthetic and vaccination protocols may need thought, since not all vets have seen a hybrid. Choose a practice comfortable with the breed and agree a diet plan with them.
