Temperament

Where the Cornish Rex Comes From

A curly cream kitten called Kallibunker was born in 1950 on a farm at Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, to an ordinary farm cat belonging to Nina Ennismore. Mated back to his mother, he proved the curl was recessive, and the breed grew from that single litter with Siamese, Burmese and shorthair outcrosses to widen a very narrow gene pool. Cats were exported to the United States in 1957. The mutation is not the same as the Devon Rex one: cross the two breeds and the kittens come out with straight coats.

Living With a Cornish Rex

Physically small and startlingly light, mentally relentless. A Cornish Rex climbs curtains, runs the length of a worktop, and finishes the day pressed against a radiator, under a duvet, or flat on your neck, because warmth-seeking drives much of its behaviour. Keep the heating higher than you would for other cats. Grooming is nearly nil, shedding minimal, but the wavy coat breaks if brushed firmly, so use a hand or a silk cloth. Chatty at a moderate level. This is not a cat to leave alone all day, and it will find anything you leave out.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with sky-high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The coat has no guard hairs, only a wavy undercoat, and the consequences are practical rather than exotic. These cats lose heat quickly, seek warmth constantly and should live indoors in a heated home; thinly furred ears, temples and bellies burn in strong sun through glass. Skin oils are not absorbed by a full coat, so some need occasional bathing and regular ear cleaning. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is documented and screened by echocardiogram, and patellar luxation is reported. A sparse coat is not a low-allergen coat. Discuss body condition, skin care and heart screening with your vet.
