Where the Ocicat Comes From

Virginia Daly of Berkley, Michigan was trying to breed a Siamese with Abyssinian points when the second generation handed her something else entirely: a spotted ivory kitten she named Tonga, born in 1964. Her daughter said he looked like a baby ocelot, and the name stuck. American Shorthair was added later for size and silver colouring. Despite the leopard-ish markings, no wild species appears anywhere in the pedigree; the spots came from recombining three ordinary domestic breeds. CFA granted championship status in 1987.

Living With a Ocicat

Ocicats learn routines fast and then exploit them: door handles, cupboard latches, the sound of a treat bag. Many take to harness walking and to fetch, and clicker training holds their attention longer than it does most cats. They are sociable rather than clingy, greet visitors instead of hiding, and do better with a second cat if the house empties for long working days. The short spotted coat sheds modestly and needs little more than a weekly rubber brush. Give them shelf height; a flat with vertical routes suits them better than a cluttered floor.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

Because the Ocicat draws on Abyssinian and Siamese lines, responsible breeders test for what those breeds carry. Pyruvate kinase deficiency, an inherited anaemia, has a straightforward DNA test, as does the rdAc form of progressive retinal atrophy that slowly erodes night vision. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is screened by echocardiogram rather than by gene test, and renal amyloidosis has been recorded in the Abyssinian background. Ask a breeder for PK deficiency and PRA results in writing. Lethargy, sudden hind-limb weakness or laboured breathing warrants same-day veterinary attention, and routine screening should be planned with your own vet.
