Where the Cymric Comes From

A longhaired Manx, and the history is the Manx history. Taillessness became common in the Isle of Man's isolated cat population centuries ago through a dominant mutation, and longhaired kittens appeared in those litters all along. Canadian breeders in the 1960s chose to develop them separately and named them Cymric, from the Welsh word for Wales, which has no connection to the cat at all and remains an odd piece of branding. Registries still disagree: some recognise the Cymric as a breed, others list exactly the same cat as a Manx Longhair.

Living With a Cymric

The gait is the giveaway: long hind legs and a short spine produce a rabbit-like hop, and these cats jump powerfully from a standing start. Temperament is loyal and dog-like, often fixed on one person, with strong hunting drive and a quiet voice that is rarely exercised. The dense double long coat mats if neglected; comb two or three times weekly and daily in the spring moult. They settle well in flats and cope with a working day alone. Persistent house soiling should never be read as bad behaviour without a spinal examination first.

Health: What to Watch For

This matters more here than in most breeds. The gene causing taillessness also shortens the spine, and in some kittens it produces Manx syndrome: spina bifida, sacral defects, hind limb weakness, megacolon, and urinary or faecal incontinence, usually evident by four to six months. Kittens inheriting two copies die before birth, so ethical breeders never mate two tailless cats and hold kittens until problems would have shown. Corneal dystrophy is also reported. A rumpy-riser's tail stump can become arthritic and painful. Have any litter-tray failure or odd gait assessed by your vet immediately.
