Where the Turkish Angora Comes From

Long-coated cats have been recorded around Ankara in central Turkey for centuries, and the breed took its name from Angora, the older form of that city name. European travellers carried them west from the 1600s onward, where they were absorbed into early Persian breeding until the original type came close to disappearing. Turkey answered institutionally: Ankara Zoo ran a conservation programme for the native cats, and animals from that stock reached North America during the 1960s. Registered Angoras abroad trace back to that preservation effort rather than to any Western foundation.

Living With a Turkish Angora

Angoras are busy, upright and physically precise, landing on narrow shelf edges other cats would not attempt. The single coat has little undercoat, so it seldom mats and a weekly comb suffices outside the spring moult. They talk in a moderate voice and hold firm opinions about routine, including which chair belongs to whom. A deaf white Angora responds to floor vibration or a flicked light rather than a called name, and should live strictly indoors. Most will supervise every task in the house from whatever high point is nearest.
