Where the Donskoy Comes From

Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia, 1987: a teacher named Elena Kovaleva took in a kitten, Varvara, who gradually lost her coat rather than being born bare. Vets could find no disease, and Varvara passed the trait to her kittens. Breeders in Rostov, later joined by others across Russia, built a breed from that line. The Donskoy hairlessness is a dominant mutation and is genetically unrelated to the recessive gene behind the Canadian Sphynx. TICA accepted the breed in the 2000s; several European registries still decline it.

Living With a Donskoy

Practical ownership revolves around temperature and grease. A Donskoy will be under the duvet within minutes, wears jumpers in winter without complaint, and leaves faint oily marks on pale bedding unless wiped down or bathed roughly weekly. There is essentially no shedding, but there is also no allergen reduction, since the protein people react to is in saliva and skin. They are relentlessly sociable, follow from room to room, and are poor candidates for long solitary days. A warm flat with another cat suits them well.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should be screened by echocardiogram, as in most modern breeds. Kittens should come from breeders who avoid doubling up the hairless gene.
