Where the Himalayan Comes From

The colourpoint pattern was deliberately moved onto a long-coated cat by researchers, not by fanciers. In the 1930s Virginia Cobb and Clyde Keeler crossed Siamese with Persians at Harvard to study how pointing is inherited, producing a kitten named Debutante in 1935. Brian Stirling-Webb in Britain and Marguerita Goforth in the United States turned that genetics work into a breeding programme, and recognition came in the late 1950s. In 1984 the CFA reclassified the Himalayan as a division of the Persian rather than a separate breed.

Living With a Himalayan

Budget real time for the coat. A Himalayan needs combing every day, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits and along the trousers, because a week of neglect produces mats that have to be clipped out. Faces need wiping most days. The cat itself is undemanding company: low to the ground, disinclined to leap onto worktops, quiet, content to occupy one sofa for hours. Shedding is heavy and constant. That combination makes a flat entirely workable, provided the household is cool and reasonably calm.

Grooming: Daily effort. Daily brushing prevents mats and hairballs, and keeps that coat show-ready. Exercise: with low energy, plan a couple of short play sessions and a sunny perch. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

Treat this as a Persian with points. Polycystic kidney disease, once widespread in the line, is detected by a PKD1 DNA test; insist on seeing results. Progressive retinal atrophy in Persian lines is also DNA testable, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy requires echocardiographic screening. The flat face brings narrowed airways, chronic tear overflow, crowded teeth and poor heat tolerance, and very typey queens have more difficult deliveries. Coat length adds a hygiene dimension, since soiled fur around the rear invites skin infection. Ask your veterinarian to check eyes, airway and mouth at every appointment.
