Where the Javanese Comes From

Nothing about this cat comes from Java. North American breeders in the 1970s and 1980s crossed Balinese, themselves long-coated Siamese named after Balinese dancers rather than any Indonesian ancestry, with Colorpoint Shorthairs to extend the range of point colours beyond the four traditional Siamese ones. The Javanese name was chosen simply to continue the geographic theme, and breeders have generally been candid about that. In 2008 the CFA folded the Javanese into the Balinese as a colour division; other registries still list it separately.

Living With a Javanese

Noise is the deciding factor. A Javanese comments on doors, meals, arrivals and departures at conversational volume and will escalate if ignored, which makes thin-walled flats and light sleepers a genuine incompatibility. The long coat has almost no undercoat, so shedding is light and mats are rare with a weekly comb. They open cupboards, ride shoulders and insert themselves into anything being read or typed. Left alone all day they deteriorate, so most people keep them in pairs or with an equally social companion.

Care Notes

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The Siamese ancestry drives the screening list. Progressive retinal atrophy in this line is detectable with the rdAc DNA test, and mucopolysaccharidosis VI, a skeletal storage disease of Siamese-derived cats, has its own DNA test. Systemic amyloidosis affecting the liver occurs in Siamese and Oriental lines and is not currently DNA testable, so watch for unexplained weight loss or jaundice. Asthma and chronic bronchial disease are also over-represented. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy calls for echocardiographic screening. A coughing, retching or notably thin cat of this type warrants prompt veterinary assessment.
