Where the Munchkin Comes From

Short-legged cats were described in a British veterinary report in the 1940s, but that line vanished during the war. The modern breed starts with Blackberry, a pregnant short-legged stray taken in by Sandra Hochenedel in Rayville, Louisiana, in 1983, whose kittens inherited the trait. TICA accepted the Munchkin for championship competition in 2003 after prolonged internal argument, and members of its genetics committee resigned over the decision. The mutation is autosomal dominant and, like several such genes, lethal when a kitten inherits two copies.

Living With a Munchkin

They are quick rather than limited, cornering hard and sprinting well, but the vertical range is reduced, so steps or ramps to beds and windowsills prevent awkward landings. Many are notorious for collecting small shiny objects and stashing them under furniture. Reach is the practical limitation in grooming: long-coated Munchkins cannot fully attend to their own backs and hindquarters, so brush those areas for them. Confidence is high and they suit flats, families and other pets, though they should not be given unsupervised outdoor access.

Because the gene is homozygous-lethal, litters are smaller. Ask breeders about chest and spine assessment in kittens, request echocardiographic heart screening, and have any breathing difficulty examined by a veterinarian immediately.
