Temperament

Where the Lykoi Comes From

Two unrelated litters of feral-born kittens, one in Tennessee and one in Virginia, turned up with patchy roan coats around 2010. Rather than assume a defect, Johnny and Brittney Gobble, working with Patti Thomas, had the cats tested at the University of Tennessee and UC Davis; the results ruled out skin disease and thyroid disorder and showed the cats carried neither the Sphynx nor the Devon Rex mutation. The trait is a natural recessive affecting hair follicles. TICA granted championship status in 2017.

Living With a Lykoi

Prey drive is the dominant trait in the house. A Lykoi stalks, pounces and will spend genuine effort on a moving toy, and household insects rarely survive. Skin management becomes a habit: weekly wiping to lift oils, cleaning the folds around the face, and shade during the balder phases. There is little shed hair, though what is shed appears as fine white guard hairs. They are friendly with their own household and more reserved with visitors, and do best with feline company during working hours.

Care Notes

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The defining point is what is not wrong. The follicles lack the components needed to maintain a full coat, so Lykoi moult in patches and can go almost bald before regrowing, and this is normal for the breed rather than illness; tell any unfamiliar veterinarian so it is not misdiagnosed as alopecia or mange. Exposed skin needs the same care as a hairless breed, including sun protection and regular wiping or bathing. The gene pool is young and small, so breeders outcross to black domestic shorthairs. Echocardiographic heart screening is advisable.
