Temperament
The Nebelung is best summed up as shy-sweet, routine-loving, graceful. Expect a cat that's affectionate on its own schedule, mostly in comfortable silence. Chaos rating 2/5 means the zoomies visit politely and leave.
Where the Nebelung Comes From
Denver, Colorado, in the mid-1980s. A black domestic shorthair named Elsa, belonging to Cora Cobb, produced a long-coated blue male kitten by a Russian Blue-type sire in 1984; he was called Siegfried, and a blue female littermate from a later mating was named Brunhilde. The Wagnerian names gave the breed its own: Nebelung plays on the German for mist. Cobb wrote the standard to follow the Russian Blue in everything but coat length, and TICA recognised the breed in 1987.
Living With a Nebelung
A Nebelung will not entertain your visitors. Strangers at the door usually mean the cat is under the bed until they leave, and that is not something socialisation fully removes. Within its own household it is affectionate and closely bonded to one or two people. Routine matters: moved furniture and shifted mealtimes register visibly. The silky semi-long double coat needs combing about twice a week, more during the spring shed. It is quiet and low-activity, which makes it an excellent flat cat but a poor boarder.
Care Notes
Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with low energy, plan a couple of short play sessions and a sunny perch. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.
Health: What to Watch For
No inherited disease is specific to the Nebelung, which reflects its recent origin from generally robust Russian Blue stock. Say that plainly rather than borrowing another breed's problem list. Routine screening covers it: periodic echocardiography for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, annual dental assessment, and close attention to weight, since a low-activity cat in a quiet home gains easily and the dense coat hides it. Run a hand along the ribs monthly. Because the breed is uncommon, share any unusual diagnosis with the breeder. Your veterinarian should set the screening interval based on the individual cat.
