Where the Ragdoll Comes From

Ann Baker began the breed in Riverside, California in the early 1960s from a white domestic longhaired cat called Josephine and her descendants, among them Daddy Warbucks, Fugianna and Buckwheat. Baker claimed Josephine's placid, pain-immune kittens resulted from a road accident and secret laboratory work, later adding extraterrestrial influence; none of this is true or genetically possible, and the docility is simply selected temperament. Baker trademarked the name and founded IRCA in 1971. Denny and Laura Dayton took the cats into mainstream registries instead, which is why the breed survived.

Living With a Ragdoll

The party trick is real: lift a Ragdoll and it usually goes limp across your forearms instead of bracing. That trust is charming and also a liability, because these cats do not reliably flee danger, so they should not roam. Expect to be followed from room to room and met at the door, usually in silence; the voice is small for the size of cat. The semi-long coat has little undercoat and mats less than it looks, but twice-weekly combing and heavier work during the spring shed are needed. Long days alone suit them badly.

Care Notes

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with low energy, plan a couple of short play sessions and a sunny perch. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch — this build gains easily.

Health: What to Watch For

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the headline concern, and the breed has its own MYBPC3 R820W DNA test; buy only from breeders who publish results, and understand that a clear test does not replace periodic echocardiography. Feline infectious peritonitis has been reported at higher rates in young pedigree cats, Ragdolls among them. Bladder stones and obesity are the common middle-age problems in a large, sedentary cat, so weigh regularly rather than judging through the coat. Laboured breathing, sudden hind-limb paralysis or appetite loss is an emergency; agree a heart-check schedule with your vet from young adulthood.
