Where the Savannah Comes From

The first Savannah kitten was born on 7 April 1986, bred by Judee Frank from a serval and a Siamese female belonging to Suzi Woods, and the kitten's name became the breed's. Patrick Kelly and Joyce Sroufe wrote the first standard and pushed for recognition; TICA registered the breed in 1996 and granted championship status in 2012. Generation numbering matters more here than in any other breed: an F1 has a serval parent, and each further generation dilutes the wild ancestry toward an ordinary domestic cat.

Living With a Savannah

Height is the defining problem. A Savannah clears kitchen counters, door frames and the top of a wardrobe without effort, so anything breakable has to go behind a closed door rather than up high. They open cupboards, carry objects around, and many actively seek water, including running taps and full baths. Expect harness walks, puzzle feeding and two solid play sessions a day, because boredom turns into destruction quickly. The short spotted coat is easy.
