Where the Somali Comes From

Somalis are longhaired Abyssinians, and the recessive gene had been surfacing in Abyssinian litters since at least the early twentieth century, treated as a fault and quietly placed as pets. Canadian and American breeders took the fluffy kittens seriously from the 1960s, and Evelyn Mague in New Jersey named the breed and founded its first club, choosing Somalia for its border with Ethiopia to signal the Abyssinian link. CFA granted championship status in 1979. The ticked coat and plumed tail are the visible result.

Living With a Somali

Somalis do not sit still. They open drawers, ride on shoulders, carry small objects off, and treat the top of a bookcase as the obvious place to be, so a home without climbing routes will simply have a cat on the curtains instead. The long ticked coat carries surprisingly little undercoat, so matting is rare and a twice-weekly comb copes, with more work at the seasonal shed. The voice is quiet, mostly chirps. They need company and daily interactive play, and suit a household that is out constantly very badly.

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with sky-high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

Abyssinian ancestry sets the testing list. Pyruvate kinase deficiency and the rdAc form of progressive retinal atrophy both have DNA tests and both are genuinely present in the breed, so clear parental results are not optional. Renal amyloidosis is documented in Abyssinian and Somali lines and presents as early kidney failure, which makes periodic blood and urine screening worthwhile from middle age. Gingivitis and patellar luxation are also reported. Ask a vet to check kneecaps and gums at annual visits, and investigate any increase in thirst or urination promptly.
