Where the Scottish Fold Comes From

Susie, a white barn cat whose ears folded forward, was noticed at a farm near Coupar Angus in Perthshire in 1961 by the shepherd William Ross, who with his wife Mary began breeding from her. Britain's GCCF stopped registering the cats in the early 1970s over health concerns, and the breed was developed instead in the United States using British and American Shorthair outcrosses. Every folded cat alive traces back to Susie, and the fold itself is a single dominant gene inherited from her.

Living With a Scottish Fold

Folds sit in odd upright postures and sprawl on their backs, and owners often read this as charm when it can equally be a cat easing sore joints. Temperament is genuinely placid and quiet, they suit flats and calm households, and they tolerate being alone reasonably well. Practically, keep jumps short with steps up to beds and sofas, use a low-sided litter tray, and keep weight strictly down, because every extra gram lands on compromised joints. The dense coat needs a weekly comb, and tightly folded ears trap wax that has to be checked.

Health: What to Watch For

The fold is caused by a dominant mutation in TRPV4 that disrupts cartilage throughout the body, not only in the ear. Osteochondrodysplasia therefore affects every folded-ear cat to some degree, producing thickened, painful joints in the tail, ankles and knees, and cats carrying two copies are crippled young. This is why the GCCF and FIFe refuse to recognise the breed at all. There is no cure; management means radiographs, lifelong pain relief and never breeding fold to fold. A stiff gait, reluctance to jump or a thickened, inflexible tail needs veterinary assessment without delay.
