Where the Siamese Comes From

Siamese-type cats appear in the Thai Tamra Maew manuscripts centuries before any Western cat show, and the breed reached Britain when a pair called Pho and Mia were given to the consul-general Edward Blencowe Gould in Bangkok in 1884; they were shown at the Crystal Palace the following year. Twentieth-century show breeding stretched the head into the long wedge seen today, while breeders who preferred the older rounder cat maintained it separately, now registered as the Thai. Both descend from the same Thailand lineage.

Living With a Siamese

The noise is the single biggest adjustment. A Siamese talks at conversational volume and above, answers back, escalates when ignored, and has opinions about closed doors at four in the morning; this cannot be trained out of them. They bond hard to one or two people, get under the duvet, and become genuinely distressed by long solitary days, so a second cat or a household often at home matters. The fine short coat sheds little and asks for almost nothing. Thin-coated and heat-seeking, they claim any warm surface, laptops included.

Care Notes

Grooming: Minimal effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with high energy, plan two or more real play sessions a day plus vertical space — cat trees, shelves, window perches. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

Siamese lines are screened for the rdAc form of progressive retinal atrophy and for mucopolysaccharidosis VI, both of which have DNA tests. Systemic amyloidosis affecting the liver is documented in the breed and typically appears in middle age as weight loss, jaundice or sudden collapse. Feline asthma and chronic gingivitis are both over-represented, so a cat coughing in a crouched position needs investigating rather than being written off as hairballs. Crossed eyes and kinked tails are cosmetic remnants of older lines. Arrange annual dental assessment and discuss amyloidosis warning signs with your vet.
