The History of Black Cats: From Temple to Superstition

Few animals have had their reputation swung so violently. The black cat is a case study in how a myth is made — and what it costs.

Sacred beginnings

In Egypt a black cat carried no negative charge whatsoever. Coat colour was not the point; the cat was the emblem of Bastet, and a dark cat in the house was protection.

The medieval turn in Europe

The reversal is European and medieval. As folk belief about witchcraft hardened, cats — nocturnal, independent, silent, difficult to command — were drawn into it, and black cats absorbed the worst of the association.

A papal letter of 1233, Vox in Rama, issued under Gregory IX, is frequently cited as the moment the Church condemned black cats. Handle that claim carefully: the document describes alleged heretical rites involving a black cat, but the popular story that it triggered Europe-wide cat exterminations is a modern extrapolation, not something the text establishes. Historians are considerably more cautious than the internet is.

What is not in doubt is that cats featured in witch-trial accusations across several centuries, and that this was lethal for cats and for the people accused alongside them.

The luck is not consistent

The superstition is regional, and it contradicts itself, which is the clearest sign it is cultural rather than observed.

The measurable modern cost

Shelters have long reported that black cats wait longer for adoption — the phenomenon is discussed under the name 'black cat syndrome'. The picture is genuinely debated: some analyses find black cats are adopted at reasonable rates but are simply more numerous, which lengthens the average wait. Some shelters have also restricted black cat adoptions around Halloween, a practice whose necessity is itself disputed.

The one uncontroversial contributing factor is unglamorous: black cats photograph poorly. In a world where animals are adopted from thumbnails on a website, a cat whose face does not resolve at small sizes is at a real disadvantage.

Reclaiming the shadow

Black Cat Appreciation Day falls on 17 August, and the UK marks National Black Cat Day on 27 October — both exist specifically to counter the bias. If you want to help a black cat, better photographs in good light do measurably more than any amount of myth-busting.

TSUKI: Nine Lives puts a black cat in the hero's role on purpose.

In the game

TSUKI: Nine Lives takes this history literally: you play Tsuki, a black cat marked by the moon, chasing the stolen moonlight across seven worlds while Orochi — the serpent that swallows the moon, the eclipse told as a monster — waits beneath the earth.
