Temperament

Where the Manx Comes From

The Isle of Man, where taillessness has been recorded for at least two centuries. A small island population let a single founder mutation become common, which is the whole explanation; shipwreck and Noah's ark tales are local colour. Manx cats were among the breeds exhibited at the earliest British cat shows and were part of the founding stock of North American registries in the early twentieth century. Kittens are graded by what remains of the tail, from rumpy through rumpy-riser and stumpy to the fully tailed longy.

Living With a Manx

The gait is the first thing visitors notice: powerful hind legs give a hopping, rabbit-like run, and the jump is better than the shape suggests. Manx are sociable, follow people, and many retrieve thrown objects. Practically, a tailless rear is harder for the cat to keep clean, so check and trim the area on longer-coated individuals. The dense double coat sheds substantially and wants brushing twice a week. Sturdy and adaptable in flats or houses, they tolerate children and dogs well when introduced properly.

Grooming: Light effort. A weekly once-over plus nail trims covers it. Exercise: with moderate energy, plan daily play sessions and a climbing spot. Health: keep up annual vet visits, dental care, and weight watch.

Health: What to Watch For

The taillessness comes from a dominant mutation in the T-box gene that is lethal when inherited from both parents, so litters are small and tailless-to-tailless matings are avoided. The same gene can shorten the spinal column too far, producing Manx syndrome: spina bifida, sacrocaudal defects, faecal or urinary incontinence, megacolon and hind-limb weakness, sometimes not obvious until four to six months old. Careful breeders hold kittens until that age. Corneal dystrophy is also recorded. Several welfare bodies object to breeding for taillessness. Any litter-box or gait change needs veterinary review.
