Where the Snowshoe Comes From

Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty, a Siamese breeder in Philadelphia, found three kittens with white feet in a litter in the 1960s and set out to fix the pattern, crossing Siamese with bi-colour American Shorthairs. The combination is hard to reproduce, because the white boots and inverted V depend on the piebald gene landing correctly over a pointed coat, and the breed nearly disappeared before Vikki Olander and later breeders revived it. TICA granted championship status in 1994. Snowshoes stay uncommon for the same reason they were hard to establish.

Living With a Snowshoe

Snowshoes talk, but the tone is softer and more melodic than a Siamese's and the frequency is lower. Water fascinates them: expect a paw in your glass, company at the bathroom sink, and occasional attempts to join a shower. They attach strongly to one person, learn to open doors, and object loudly to being shut out of rooms. The short coat needs a weekly once-over and sheds little, though the pale body fur shows on dark fabric. A companion animal helps a great deal if the household is out all day.

The kinked tails and crossed eyes of older pointed lines are cosmetic and have largely been bred out. Because the population is small, buyers should ask specifically what the parents were tested for rather than assuming. Dental disease follows the Siamese pattern, so book annual oral checks and raise any coughing or unexplained weight loss with your vet.
